Heathrow Car Parks – Landside Surveys for Safety and Access Improvements

    Project Overview

Heathrow Car Parks – Landside Surveys for Safety and Access Improvements

    Scope of Services

    • Underground Utility Detection
    • Topographical Survey
    • Ultra-Wideband Ground Penetrating Radar (UWB-GPR)

    Project Approach

The site works were programmed in stages following several weeks of planning, permit submissions and stakeholder engagement. Surveys were delivered across live car parks and, as the scope expanded, also included road sections linking the sites. Delivery was managed around changing client priorities and ongoing operational constraints.

    Key Challenges

    • A late programme reversal shortly before the planned start date
    • Live operational car parks with vehicles remaining in place rather than pre-cleared working zones
    • Higher-than-expected numbers of manholes affecting survey effort
    • Additional road sections incorporated into the project scope during delivery

    Solutions and Delivery

When Heathrow changed priorities shortly before mobilisation, the programme was re-sequenced so the site teams could still begin works without losing momentum. As zoned-off areas were not made available, surveys were completed under a blanket permit with continuous on-site coordination around parked vehicles and operational constraints. The scope was then extended to include adjoining roads, with delivery planned around staggered outputs and a final handover period.

    Outcomes

Catify’s data supported the development of safer and more efficient airport car park infrastructure by providing reliable utilities and topographical data in a complex operational setting. The project highlights Catify’s ability to remain adaptable under changing priorities while maintaining programme control in a live aviation environment.
