Hackney C 6.6kV – LOD2 Utilities Survey Using Mobile Mapping Data

    Project Overview

Catify delivered a challenging, high-value LOD2 underground utility detection commission on behalf of UK Power Networks for the Hackney C 6.6kV project. A key feature of the scheme was the use of NavVis mobile mapping point cloud data to support a topological evaluation at LOD1, moving beyond a fully traditional static survey workflow.

    Scope of Services

    • LOD2 Underground Utility Detection
    • Topological evaluation at LOD1 using NavVis point cloud data
    • Processing and quality assurance of large survey datasets
    • Output delivery in CAD, PDF and Revit-compatible formats

    Project Approach

The project combined underground utility detection with point cloud-based evaluation, requiring close attention to data quality, point density and interpretability throughout processing. Because a number of critical elements were extracted from the NavVis dataset rather than through a conventional static-only survey approach, the processing workflow was a central part of delivery.

    Key Challenges

    • Use of point cloud data for elements that would typically rely on conventional survey techniques
    • Need to maintain confidence in data quality and interpretation throughout processing
    • Management of a significant volume of data across a wider processing team

    Solutions and Delivery

The project team coordinated the processing effort across the wider delivery group while maintaining focus on data quality and robustness. Outputs were developed and checked in formats suitable for design and modelling use, including CAD, PDF and Revit-compatible deliverables.

    Outcomes

    • Survey area: 8,500m²
    • Utility network surveyed: 8,200m total length
    • Data processed: 40GB across 78 files
    • Manholes surveyed: 42
    • Office processing team: 12 people (331 hours total processing time)

The completed package met the project requirements and demonstrated how mobile mapping data can be incorporated effectively into utility survey delivery where processing and quality control are managed carefully. It also highlights Catify’s ability to support technically demanding electricity infrastructure projects with innovative survey methods, underpinned by a significant volume of survey and processing output.
