Project Overview
Catify was commissioned to support National Grid Electricity Distribution on the Golden Hill to Milford Haven feasibility study, a major project exploring a new high-voltage cable route in West Wales. The commission required a broad, multidisciplinary feasibility process designed to assess technical, environmental and logistical constraints before route design progressed.
Scope of Services
- Composite Utility Drawing (CUD) search
- Desktop study and environmental review
- Section 58 checks
- Site walkthrough and reconnaissance
- Route planning and option assessment
- Photo editing and positioning
- Custom Street View creation
- Local Authority packs
- Cross-section sketches
- Special Engineering Difficulties (SED) identification and reporting
- Drone survey
- Utility, mobile mapping and UWB-GPR surveys
- Geotechnical investigation
- Plant avoidance mark-up
- Cable route design
Project Approach
The study combined desktop analysis, field reconnaissance and specialist survey inputs to build a structured feasibility package. Each workstream fed into a final deliverable designed to identify a preferred route, highlight constraints and support early design, consultation and cost planning. The project was delivered through a series of linked site instructions covering aerial survey, utilities, geotechnical investigation, design and feasibility outputs.
Key Challenges
- Balancing technical, environmental and logistical constraints across a strategic route
- Coordinating multiple specialist suppliers and disciplines within a single feasibility programme
- Working with a route that interacts with heavily used transport corridors
Solutions and Delivery
nformation, ground condition data, route observations, environmental constraints and stakeholder considerations. The project also included collaboration with the South Wales Trunk Road Agency to help agree a route that reduced disruption along a key transport corridor out of Pembroke Dock. With the cable design element progressing separately, the remaining workstreams were completed and delivered to support the next stage of network development.
Outcomes
The feasibility study provided NGED with a structured, evidence-led basis for route selection and future design. It demonstrates Catify’s ability to coordinate large-scale feasibility commissions where survey, environmental, geotechnical and planning inputs must be brought together into a single decision-making package.
