Project Overview
Following successful delivery during Phase 1, Catify was appointed to undertake Phase 2 survey works on the Balfour Beatty A66 West redevelopment programme. The project involved gathering utilities, topographical and carriageway condition information across a remote section of the route to support future redevelopment.
Scope of Services
- Underground Utility Detection
- Basic Topographical Survey
- Ultra-Wide Band Ground Penetrating Radar (UWB-GPR)
Project Approach
The works were delivered through a staged programme across multiple fields and sections of the corridor. Because of the remoteness and scale of the site, daily scheduling and field-by-field planning were central to delivery. Administrative coordination was also required to manage inductions, certifications and supervisory requirements before site activities could proceed.
Key Challenges
- Steep hills, high grass, cropped fields and summer weather conditions
- Remote working conditions requiring welfare planning and equipment shuttling
- Multiple landowners and access points to coordinate
- Strict induction and competency requirements that reduced the available supervisory resource
- An original site plan that lacked the detail needed for day-to-day programme control
Solutions and Delivery
A more detailed site plan was produced and broken down by field and by day to create a workable delivery programme. This improved the sequencing of survey teams and became the basis for both Catify’s programme management and the client’s own planning. The surveys were delivered through a tightly coordinated four-stage programme designed to maintain progress despite the logistical challenges of the route.
Outcomes
The Phase 2 surveys remained on programme and provided the client with the data needed to support design and redevelopment planning. The project reinforced Catify’s ability to deliver corridor-scale surveys in remote environments where access coordination, programme control and multidisciplinary work are all critical.
